Express Entry: It’s one of the prominent ways for immigration to Canada. The express entry is for skilled immigrants who want to settle in Canada permanently. It’s a time-saving procedure for providing you the opportunity of getting your visa within a few months.

Express Entry manages applications for permanent residence under these federal economic immigration programs:

  • the Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • the Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • the Canadian Experience Class

Provincial Nominee Program: This program is for workers who have the skills, education, and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province and want to live in that province and become permanent residents of Canada. Each province has its own requirements upon qualifying, which the immigrants will be granted a visa. This process can be paper-based, or online based under the Express Entry program. To start with, you need to meet the eligibility requirements and apply directly to the province or territory you desire to move into, and get a nomination from that province.

Some Temporary Ways for Immigration to Canada are as follows:

Temporary Foreign Worker Program: In this program, employers must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire foreign workers. This is in attempts to fill temporary labour and skill shortages. The LMIA, if approved by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) verifies that there is a need for a temporary worker and that no Canadians or permanent residents are available to do the job.

International Mobility Program (IMP): In this program, employers can hire temporary workers without an LMIA. These exemptions are based on:

  • Provide broad economic, cultural or other competitive advantages for Canada, and
  • Provide reciprocal benefits for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

LMIA code exemptions under the IMP can be found here: LMIA exemption codes

Study Visa: If your program of study is more than six months, you need a study permit unless you are exempted. A foreign national can study in Canada if they:

    • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
    • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
  • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
  • prove to an officer that they will leave Canada when their study permit expires

If the foreign national’s study permit application gets approved, they will automatically be given either a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). The study permit alone does not allow a you to enter Canada, it is the temporary resident visa, or an eTA that allows you to travel to and enter Canada.

You are allowed to work in Canada if you have a study permit for 20 hours/week, with some exceptions.

Family Sponsorship:  This family sponsorship program allows the already residing families in Canada to sponsor their family members, children for study in Canada, or pursuing a career as immigrants in Canada. Only permaneny residents or citizens of Canada can sponsor someone to come to Canada.
