ECA is a common document that is mostly required in most federal immigration programs in Canada. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points can be claimed under the immigration streams if one has an ECA.

What is an ECA and how does it increase CRS points?

An Educational Credential Assessment is an assessment of your degree, recognition, or testament used to verify its equivalency with a Canadian education. In case you have more than one post-secondary degree, you typically just need to have your most significant level evaluated.

In case you’re qualified for Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you’ll need an Educational Credential Assessment before you can enter the pool.

If you are qualified under the Federal Skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class, you do not need an ECA to enter the pool, however, you can claim CRS points if you get an ECA for your education.

Only main applicants require an Educational Credential Assessment. Accompanying family members such as the main applicant’s spouse, common law, or conjugal partner do not require an Educational Credential Assessment. However, if they have a post-secondary degree, it is recommended they get an Educational Credential Assessment to claim additional CRS points.

How long does the evaluation process take?

Several weeks to months can be taken to get an Education Credential Assessment. Since you need an Educational Credential Assessment to be qualified to submit to the Express Entry pool under the skilled worker program, beginning on your ECA normally should be one of the initial steps of your Express Entry immigration process.

How to get an ECA?

You should get an ECA from an assigned office. Kindly visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) site for complete and up-to-date designated organizations which conduct the ECA’s.
